Human Trafficking Tap to learn more

Across the globe, an estimated 27-28 million people are trapped in modern-day slavery - the blight on humanity that generates over $150 billion dollars in illicit profit each year, with women and children disproportionately exploited in both sex and labor trafficking. In the United States alone, the National Human Trafficking Hotline identified nearly 12,000 potential trafficking cases involving more than 20,000 potential victims in 2024, illustrating that detected cases likely represent only a fraction of the true scale of the issue. Fortunately, a number of advocacy and service organizations are making a tangible difference, including global and U.S. partners like UNODC and the Inter‑Agency Coordination Group Against Trafficking in Persons, Maiti Nepal (and it’s American arm - Friends of Maiti Nepal), and community-based providers like CAST in the Los Angeles, California metrolpolitan area. And at the forefront of counter the rise of trafficking is the technology & innovation-focused non-profit co-founded by Academy Award-winning actress Demi Moore - Thorn. Human trafficking targets the most vulnerable among us, fuels organized crime and normalizes the idea that human beings can be bought and sold. If you are able, please consider donating to any one of the reputable not-for-profit organizations mentioned above.

Affordable Housing Tap to learn more

At the top of the list of thngs that I’m grateful for in my personal kansha suru practice is - having a roof over my head. I am well aware that many others cannot say the same. Habitat for Humanity offers one of the most tangible ways to support the dignity and stability of families facing the affordable housing crisis. In its most recent fiscal year, HFH helped ~3 million people around the world build or improve a place to call home, with an additional 20.8 million people gaining the potential to improve their housing conditions through Habitat's training programs and advocacy work. The need has never been more acute: home prices have reached all-time highs while housing shortages and cost burdens sit at their highest rates in years, pricing out millions of would-be first-time buyers in every region of the U.S. Affordable homeownership doesn't just put a roof over a family's head - it changes trajectories. Studies show stable, affordable housing helps free families from chronic stress and fear, builds the foundation for healthy child development, and allows homeowners to save for the future and invest in education and career growth - with surveys of Habitat homeowners showing better physical and financial health, more confident parenting, and even improved grades for their children after moving into a Habitat home. Whether you swing a hammer on a build site, sort donations at a ReStore, or simply give financially, every contribution moves a family closer to the security and self-sufficiency that a place of their own makes possible.

Environmentalism Tap to learn more

The numbers paint a sobering picture. Global temperatures are currently projected to reach 2.3–2.5°C above pre-industrial levels if national climate plans are fully implemented — and 2.8°C under current policies alone. Even if every country's existing climate commitments were honored, global emissions in 2035 would still be more than double — roughly 125–150% — the level required to stay on a 1.5°C-compatible pathway. Environmental stewardship is an immediate, collective responsibility that will define the quality of life for every generation that follows ours. Continue reading to learn more about four of the top-rated environmental charities in operation today.
The Nature Conservancy
They protect over 125 million acres of land and thousands of miles of rivers across 79 countries, with a science-based approach spanning climate action, land and water protection, and sustainable food and water systems. The Nature Conservancy holds a 4-star Charity Navigator rating with a 98% accountability score.
The Rainforest Trust
They focus on purchasing and protecting actual acres of rainforest rather than general advocacy, and their "Saves Challenge" covers operating expenses so that 100% of conservation-designated donations go directly to conservation action. To date, the Rainforest Trust has protected over 45 million acres of tropical habitat.
Environmental Defense Fund
EDF works with coastal communities and local industries to develop sustainable land and water management, and uses cutting-edge technology - including their MethaneSAT satellite - to track and reduce methane emissions globally. They also hold the Platinum Seal of Transparency, issued by GuideStar.
World Wildlife Fund
WWF works in over 100 countries to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to biodiversity on Earth, spanning ocean protection, forest conservation, and climate policy advocacy. They are one of the most recognized and trusted conservation brands worldwide.

Wildfire Relief for Animals (specifically in the communities impacted by the 2025 Eaton Fire) Tap to learn more

This one hit close to home. In the midst of the devastating fires that erupted from Pacific Palisades to Altadena in early 2025, the Pasadena Humane Society mobilized with extraordinary speed. In the first three weeks alone, they took in approximately 1,000 animals that were injured, displaced, or separated from their families — ultimately helping more than 1,500 pets and wildlife during the fire and its aftermath. They provided shelter, medical care, and emergency resources for a remarkable range of animals: dogs, cats, bunnies, goats, peacocks & cockatoos, and even a pony found their way through the shelter's doors. The medical demands were immense. Veterinary technicians treated animals with raw, burned paw pads, singed whiskers, swollen eyelids, and severe injuries requiring intensive wound care, pain management, and oxygen support. On the reunion front, the numbers have also been inspiring. Their Strike Team in the field and fire zone conducted more than 800 successful reunifications with local families. Pasadena Humane also established an emergency hotline, a pet food and supply distribution site for affected owners, and coordinated with shelters across the state. San Diego Humane Society was among the partner shelters that took in over 50 adoptable animals from Pasadena Humane to make space during the crisis - a gesture that Pasadena Humane later repaid by welcoming dogs from San Diego during a large-scale hoarding investigation. A beautiful full-circle moment. To learn more and support the amazing work of this organization, check out —> About Pasadena Humane

Scholastic Chess Tap to learn more

Having started learning to play chess around the age of 9 and seeing firsthand the positive influence it’s had on my life, I wholeheartedly believe that chess can be benefitially transformative for children and young teens because playing trains the mind to have greater focus, sustained concentration, exercises creative problem-solving, reduces impulsivity (i.e. Think before you act!), all while also teaching sportsmanship and learning to cope with defeat in a healthy way. These are lifelong skills that children can take with them into real-world challenges for years to come. The most direct and grassroots approach way to support chess education is to donate chess sets and/or work with local staff to start a scool chess club. You can volunteer as a coach or advisor at your local school, or help a school get affiliated with US Chess so that it can access resources for bringing chess to the youth. The United State Chess Federation actively seeks partnerships with affiliates that offer chess programs to Title I schools — either as part of the school day or as an afterschool activity — providing 16 free memberships for students and 8 sets of boards and pieces per program. Even a few hours a week of mentorship is estiamted to make a meaningful difference, and no grandmaster-level skill is required — enthusiasm and consistency matter far more to kids. Other way to give back include donating to a well-established organization with measurable impact. For US citizens, some good options are:
US Chess Trust
The US Chess Trust supplies chess equipment to programs that serve Title I students and offers grants for schools traveling to national scholastic tournaments.
National Scholastic Chess Foundation
NSCF offers weekly enrichment chess classes in schools across multiple states and engages with incarcerated and at-risk youth to help develop better decision-making skills, while also providing need-based and merit scholarships so every interested student can participate.
